Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is mould?
Mould can be many different colours – black, green, white, grey, and orange to brown. It is ubiquitous – that is, it is found everywhere. Moulds can be furry, slimy or powdery. Some have musty, stale or earthy odours.
Mould requires water, oxygen and a food source to grow. The food source can be any organic material, inside a home, mould food sources can come from cooking oils, bacteria, particle matter and dust etc.
Mould can grow almost anywhere there is moisture, high humidity or damp conditions. It reproduces by releasing spores which are transported in air currents.
What are the possible health effects from exposure to mould?
The health effects from exposure to mould can vary from negative, minor, or serious and can be temporary, long-term or permanent – all of which may vary over time. These health effects can vary dependent on individual sensitivity and the degree and type of mould. Those most at risk include the age susceptible and those with pre-existing medical conditions or allergies.
The most typical and common symptoms that may result from mould exposure include:
- Eye irritation (burning, watery or reddened eyes).
- Respiratory problems (such as wheezing, coughing, or difficulty breathing).
- Skin rashes or irritation.
- Headaches and fatigue.
- Nose or throat irritation.
- Nasal and sinus congestion.
These symptoms can occur alone or in combination and can be magnified for those individuals suffering from asthma or other allergies.
Why does mould grow on curtains & Blinds?
The problem is when condensation occurs on the window, this creates a moist environment where mould can grow, usually on the back of curtains. Block out curtains have a coating on the reverse (the white side of the curtain,) this coating basically stops the curtain from breathing. The condensation, doubled with the warm humid weather presents a perfect breeding ground for mould.

How do I measure my curtains?
For the measurement of your curtains, first measure the height (drop) and width of the curtain. For height (drop), take the measurements from top to bottom while they are hanging, and for width hold the bottom of the curtain and measure it across the hem. And then, multiply the measurements of height and width, this will give you square meter (SQM) size of curtains.
